Volunteer EMT vs. Contracting Medical Support

Volunteer EMTS can at first glance, seem like a great idea and a way to cut operational expenses. However, when your event hires a contractor for medical support, you and your organization are protected by our layers of experience, medical direction, and insurance.

Backcountry EMS complies with all basic state licensing requirements: business license, corporate income tax, and relevant employment tax accounts.

In addition, Wilderness Medics needs a license to practice medicine in each state we operate. The requirements for this license varies from state to state and sometimes, county to county.

Some states require a contract with a receiving hospital including approved medical protocols and the receiving hospital also needs to have approved the medical director.

Once the company requirements are fulfilled, our medical personnel working the contract also need to be approved. Each state has its own rules and regulations on how to achieve a state license. Some require being physically in-state to get live-scanned fingerprinting, or take certain competency and skills testing.

Should the worst occur and a guest becomes injured while at the event, our paramedics and EMTs treat the patient according to established protocols specifically created for use in remote environments. Should those protocols need clarification Backcountry medical staff have ER doctors serving as Medical Direction available for consultation.

If your event does use volunteer medical staffing, your organization will bear all the liability for injury, and treatment. De-risk your event by hiring Backcountry EMS: professional, experienced medical support.
